Why not call it Updates, What I’m Doing, Follow Me, Look at This, Networker, Latest News, Information Filter

Why not?  ‘cos it’s Boring and doesn’t inspire an action or following.

There are 2 Parts to the Human Brain – Left and right or commonly known as Logical and Emotional. We use the Emotional part of our brain to make many buying decisions and we use the Logical Part of our brain to justify these decisions.

The name Twitter in itself, is a ‘green brain’ word – it’s catchy and inspires an emotional reaction. Whereas ‘Updates’ or ‘Latest News’ or  ‘Information Filter’ is about as Red Brain as possible, makes you think of logical definitions and makes you somewhat cautious.

Sales people in (or thinking of joining) the twittersphere for business, must know how to activate the green brain in 140 characters.

Think of it this way - what do we do at a green light?  Put the pedal to the metal and we go.  So the Emotional Brain is the GREEN Brain!

What do we do at a red light?  We stop, look left, look right; look for warning and reason’s not to go or not to move forward or to move with caution.  This is the Logical Brain – our RED Brain!

Twitter is designed to encourage interaction and conversations with followers.  In doing this effectively, you can increase brand awareness, increase enquiries and even obtain referrals.

So the question now is, how can you get more people to follow you on Twitter and how can you excite more people with your Tweets… You guessed it: make your Tweets more GREEN Brain!

Simply put, you need to use emotional language that increases interest and inspires contact – most often achieved through the WIIFM (what’s in it for me) factor.

One of the number one motivators of human behaviour and decision making is avoiding a problem, issue, concern, worry or stress. Does your latest tweet address one of these motivators?

I recently read a tweet:

Wow - the [name of business] is exploding - so many businesses getting involved and growing their business - DM for more info

This tweet has minimal WIIFM (What’s In It For Me).  It shows that the company is exploding (good emotional word), which may peak some peoples curiosity.  It would grab more attention if it specified the kind of companies, giving followers something to relate to.  So instead, it could have read:

[Name of Business] is exploding profits of SMEs & is now inundated with businesses to help…DM for the secrets!

Don’t forget, that twitter is about having a conversation, sharing of information in an informal and very public setting.  Keep your tweets varied, interesting and don’t be afraid to share a bit of yourself, as well as that of your business…so, remember to stay GREEN Brain with your Tweets!

Thanks for the tip Adam! I found the website really useful. I particularly liked the tip: Don’t jump into self promotion or “the hard sell”. So true! So many people in Twitterland -and life!- go straight to a 'spiel' on what they do and how great they are. Check out this great link http://tinyurl.com/cwwpnf which goes into more detail on why this outdated strategy doesn't work!
